Every letter is written by an AI model (Anthropic's Claude) for you. The character is fictional and AI-written, not a real person, and will say so if you ask.
Each letter in the app is labeled: “Written by AI. A fictional character, not a real person.” The inbox and every other state of the letter screen show the same label.
His Letters is for adults 18 and older. Companion chatbots may not be suitable for some minors. It is a fictional romance with no explicit content. It stays light and suggestive, never graphic.
Before any letter reaches you, it is checked for crisis language, sexually explicit content, references to minors, medical or legal advice, and pressure to drink alcohol. A letter that fails is written again; if it keeps failing, it is not sent.
Each reply is compared, on your phone and on our server, against a short list of specific phrases about suicide, self-harm, or abuse. If one matches, the app shows those crisis resources right away. The check recognizes only particular phrases. Most ways of describing a hard or dangerous situation will not match it, so the always-available “Need support right now?” link is the one to rely on. No one monitors your replies, and His Letters cannot contact anyone for you.
His Letters is not a crisis service and is not a substitute for professional help, including medical, psychological, or counseling care. If you are in danger or thinking about harming yourself, contact your local emergency services; in the United States, call or text 988. In the app, “Need support right now?” shows crisis resources at any time, and it works even offline. In English it lists U.S. services: the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (call or text 988) and the Crisis Text Line (text HOME to 741741).
Each letter has “Report this letter” at the bottom: a panel inside the app with five reasons and an optional line, sent to our server without leaving the app.
