Yes. It is free, with nothing to buy.
You must be 18 or older to use His Letters. Companion chatbots may not be suitable for some minors.
No. The character is fictional and is not a real person. Every letter is written by an AI model (Anthropic's Claude) for you. Each letter in the app is labeled: “Written by AI. A fictional character, not a real person.”
No. There is no live chat window to keep open and no feed. You get one letter a day, and you can write back to each letter, up to 300 characters.
The story is 30 letters long, one a day, and it ends with its last letter.
No. His Letters is one ongoing correspondence with one character, Dominic, in one story told across 30 letters.
No. His Letters is not a crisis service and is not a substitute for professional help, including medical, psychological, or counseling care. The character cannot contact anyone on your behalf. If you are in danger or thinking about harming yourself, contact your local emergency services; in the United States, call or text 988. In the app, “Need support right now?” shows crisis resources at any time, and it works even offline. In English it lists U.S. services: the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (call or text 988) and the Crisis Text Line (text HOME to 741741).
No. There is no account, email, or password. A random key created when you start lets only your phone open your letters.
To write each next letter, we keep the name you give us, your replies, and the letters written for you with a short memory of your story. Anthropic writes each letter, and Cloudflare hosts our letter server. The app has no ads, no analytics, and no advertising or tracking SDKs. The whole list is in the Privacy Policy.
In the app, go to Settings → Delete my data. This deletes your letters, replies, story memory and safety note from our server immediately, and then from your phone. If our server cannot confirm the deletion, the app tells you, so it never claims to have deleted something it did not. Separately, your letters, replies, story memory and safety note are deleted automatically 90 days after your story ends, or 90 days after you last read or replied, whichever comes first.
